The Arnold, as in Schwarzenegger, has landed. The Arnold Classic is being held this weekend here in Columbus, Ohio. Over 18000 athletes are expected to compete in 44 different sports.
The Arnold, , has been a rite of Spring in Columbus for years. Schwarzenegger appeal to the masses of body building has seen this event grow from a moderately sized event to the huge production it is today. In addition to standard body building competitions for both men and women, the event has several events which are new this year.
New this year are:
-Arnold Figure Skating Exhibition is scheduled Saturday in the Dispatch Ice Haus
-Arnold Amateur Strongman will bring 50 of the world’s top amateurs to compete in a new event separate from the professionals in the Arnold Strongman Classic
-Art at the Arnold where artists compete in a drawing and painting competition
-Amateur MMA Festival
-Arnold Sports Photo Workshop
-Ohio Senior Olympics competitions added to the Active Living Festival
-CrossFit multisport event that promotes overall physical fitness
The event which promotes health and fitness, also does some good things for the Columbus community. The Arnold sponsors four different scholarship programs to benefit area youths. The event, over four days draws hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world to either compete, or view the competitions.
While I personally am not a fan of bodybuilding, I can’t seem to get away from them this weekend. The hotel where I am living has been overrun with testosterone and pecs. Last night, while doing laundry, I rode the elevator with a former Mr. Universe, and three Russian body builders. If I were a fan of freakishly oversized muscle men, I would have been tongue tied, but I had a nice, but brief conversation with the men, wished them all well in the competition. Luckily, they laughed when I asked if “Break a leg†had a different connotation for body builders than actors.
I have included pictures of a couple of the guys I have chatted with over the past couple days. I’m hoping to get a few to pose for pictures and give me an interview this weekend.
