‘The Avengers': What You Need to Know Before the Movie

The Avengers is one of the most talked-about films of 2012. It’s being hyped as the comic book movie ever. Whether or not that’s true, audiences can decide for themselves. However, there are few things they should know before they see the film.

First of all, it’s packed with stars. Robert Downey, Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man. Chris Hemsworth brings back Thor. Chris Evans leads the way with Captain America. Scarlett Johansson brings Black Widow front and center. Mark Ruffalo breathes new life into The Hulk. Finally, Jeremy Renner introduces Hawkeye. That’s a lot of hunky satisfaction all in one film.

Next, the super villain is none other than Thor’s brother, Loki. The Norse troublemaker, played by Tom Hiddleston, is still angry over losing the chance to rule Asgard. So he decides to take apart Earth out of vengeance and spite.

Two of the superheroes don’t like playing with others. That would be RDJ’s Tony Stark and Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. The difference is that Stark works out his aggression with sarcasm while Banner gets angry. And anger is never a good thing in his case.

The two Chris’s— Evans and Hemsworth—rule the film. Chris Evans’ Captain America is in charge of the group that’s trying to save the world. However, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor holds the key to defeating his tricky brother, Loki. That makes them both indispensable in The Avengers equation.

Johansson’s Black Widow and Renner’s Hawkeye have something in common. They’re both black ops agents. Each of them possesses a particular skill set for assassination. Hawkeye’s Clint Barton is an archery expert while Black Widow’s Natasha Romanova is tops in martial arts. Together, they’re lethal.

Samuel L. Jackson pulls all the strings as Nick Fury, the leader of the mysterious S.H.I.E.D organization. He wants to rid the world of all evil and has a plan to do it. Unfortunately, that sometimes doesn’t sit well with the “Council”; the mysterious overseeing body behind the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

Avengers writer/director, Joss Whedon, knows his comic books. He’s the man who brought Buffy, the Vampire Slayer to life and made her a household name. He hopes to do the same for heroes of The Avengers.

Lastly, the movie’s already a hit overseas where it raked in an impressive $178 million during the first few days. It’s expected to do even better in the U.S., perhaps surpassing The Hunger Games as the top box office smash.
