Leonard’s worlds collide on Big Bang Theory, just as they once did when he dated Penny (Kaley Cuoco). This time, though, he’s with Priya (Aarti Mann), and she doesn’t get his obsession with World of Warcraft. Yet, this predicament isn’t quite the focus of season one, episode 19, “Zarnecki Incursion.” Rather, the gang band together to help Sheldon (Jim Parsons), whose WoW account has been hacked and everything stolen.
“The mighty Sheldon, level 85 blood elf, hero of the eastern kingdoms, has been picked clean like a carcass in the desert sun,” Sheldon proclaims on Big Bang Theory. “What kind of world do we live where a man would take another man’s battle ostrich?” Sheldon also asks.
While Penny feels bad for Sheldon, knowing how much the “game” means to him, Priya just wants Leonard (Johnny Galecki) to pay attention to her. But with Leonard obsessed with helping out and tracking down the hacker, Priya storms out and says, “I think it’s sexy to date a boy trapped in a man’s body.” Leonard doesn’t catch the sarcasm.
Meanwhile, across the hall, Penny is with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) having a girl’s night and figuring out what warrants saying “That bitch!” With a little liquor in Amy, she says that it’s a mammal’s natural instinct to ostracize ill-mannered members of the group, like Priya. After all, as Penny points out, Penny’s the one who turned Leonard into quality boyfriend material.
Back to the boys. Howard (Simon Helberg) finds the hacker, a guy named Todd Zarnecki (Christopher Douglas Reed), and the Big Bang Theory gang decide to head to Carlsbad, CA to reclaim what’s Sheldon’s. They put their hands out for a pact, but first Sheldon hesitates to put a napkin over their hands first. “I’m hell-bent on catching a cyber-criminal, not the common cold,” Sheldon explains.
Before they head to Carlsbad, they have a slight delay. Howard always watches Wheel of Fortune with his mom. This doesn’t mean that the off-screen voice shows her face. Rather, as she bleaches her moustache, Howard tells her what letters are in the puzzle and she miraculously solves them.
While this is happening, Priya calls Leonard and he lies about being at work, rather than tell her he’s doing something with World of Warcraft again. Raj (Kunal Nayyar) ends up covering for him, but then again Raj did say: “Bros before… my sister.”
Out in Carlsbad finally, Sheldon brings out his klingon batliff to intimidate. Problem is, Todd takes the collectible right out of Sheldon’s hands. Disheartened, they leave, only to experience car trouble on their way back. Penny comes to pick them up and she gets a kick out of Leonard not telling Priya about where he was. “It doesn’t matter if she gets it,” she says of WoW. “As long as she’s pretty.”
When Penny learns that the guys didn’t get what they came for from the hacker, she turns the car back around. “I’m going to show you how we finish a quest in Nebraska,” she says. And, oh, she does–by kicking him in the balls.
Big Bang Theory “Zarnecki Incursion” seemed to be a lot about Sheldon and his WoW quest, but the underlying story says a lot about what viewers might have to look forward to in the rest of the BBT season. Penny, increasingly, doesn’t like Priya. After the two girls experience a long awkward, silent walk up the stairs together, Penny finally admits: “Amy’s right. I do want to fling my poop at her.” Will Leonard and Priya stick together? Or will Penny tell Leonard how she feels? There’s potential for some drama on this comedy in the coming weeks.
Big Bang Theory airs on CBS Thursdays at 8pm Eastern.
