The Fate of FLDS Children

The April 3rd raid on the Yearning for Zion ranch in in Eldorado, West Texas made big headlines. Texas authorities stormed the polygamist sect ranch, and scooped up more than 460 children after a caller claimed she was a 16-year-old girl being sexually abused there by a 49-year-old “spiritual husband.”

Fresh custody hearings began this week for the 460-plus children. The state initially claimed more than half the polygamist sect’s underage girls were either pregnant or mothers. But confusing family ties mean more than a hundred of the children of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – or FLDS – have still not been matched with their parents.

Was Texas right to scoop up all the FLDS children from their families in West Texas?  Did the state have a choice?  Has it made the right one?
