`The Hunger Games’ Film Sequel Lands Well-Credentialed Writer

The first Hunger Games movie doesn’t even hit theaters for another two months, but the big wigs over at Lionsgate studios have already landed the star writer who will pen the film sequel, Catching Fire.

According to the latest news, the studio has hired well-credentialed Hollywood scribe Simon Beaufoy, the same writer who penned the Oscar-winning flick Slumdog Millionaire, to adapt the second book in The Hunger Games trilogy into a riveting onscreen sequel.

By the way, Beaufoy also wrote the James Franco flick 127 Hours and the cult classic The Full Monty, so it sounds like Catching Fire is certainly in experienced hands.

Also reportedly onboard for Catching Fire are Director Gary Ross and the entire original cast, including Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen, and Josh Hutcherson as fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark. The Hunger Games’ author Suzanne Collins will also be assisting in the production.

Although this news is exciting, fans of the series will have to wait a long, long time before any of this actually comes to fruition. As of now, the sequel is slated to hit theaters on November 13, 2013.

On the upside, The Hunger Games comes out March 23, 2012, so there’s that to look forward to.

With so much buzz already, it’ll be interesting to see the mark this movie trilogy makes on pop culture. And, with the Twilight film franchise coming to an end soon, there’s certainly room for a new series to take over the young adult movie scene. Sounds like the odds are in this series’ favor.
