It pays to have a dad with bigtime Hollywood status and connections, as will be the case for young Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith. Jaden is set for another starring role, this time portraying a young karate student in the remake of “The Karate Kid”. The 2010 version of the film also stars Mr. Martial arts himself, Jackie Chan, as the teacher, but not Mr. Miagi. In fact this will be a reboot of Karate Kid with a different story behind. No wax on, wax off Danielson this time around. You can jump below to The Karate Kid 2010 movie trailer in YouTube HD video, or read on for plot synopsis.

The Karate Kid 2010 (arriving to theaters June 11th) will have Jaden Smith as Dre Parker, an eleven year old boy who moves from Detroit to Beijing with his mom due to her new job. While there he falls in love with a girl named Mei Ying, but the relationship meets with opposition due to the cultural differences. It also causes problems for Dre as he gets bullied by the head bully, Cheng. With seemingly nowhere to turn, Dre ends up meeting a mentor, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) who trains him using unconventional methods. He does his best to prepare young Dre for a karate tournament in which he will face the enemy bully.

As you can see from the Karate Kid’s plot description it is quite similar to the original, only the original names have been changed a bit. Will Smith and family recently appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and discussed how they lived in China for some time to help Dre on the movie.

The newest film comes 26 years after the original starring Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita. Once again, it seems Hollywood is forcing itself to churn out remade material rather than just inventing new movies. The idea is probably that new young audiences can connect to the film, but why remake everything? Sometimes it’s fun to see new ideas on screen. Notice that the majority of the films up for Best Picture in the Oscar category are usually fresh, new and never seen before. You’ll be hard-pressed to find many remakes up for Best Picture in the past 10 years of movies.

That’s no disrespect to Jaden Smith either. He showcased a fine performance with his dad in “The Pursuit of Happyness” so I wouldn’t be surprised if the reviews are positive about his work in this film. Jackie Chan, maybe he’ll surprise us. Check out The Karate Kid movie trailer 2010 edition via YouTube video below. One positive this film brings is that it gives youngsters inspiration to channel negative emotions into a disciplined art like karate, or working out or sports, we can hope!

Is this a movie you’re excited to see, or more of a DVD/Blu-ray rental? Or not interested at all?
