Tonight’s exciting two-hour season finale of the CBS crime drama The Mentalist was definitely full of surprises. Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigate the bombing of a local gas station with a little help from Patrick “The Mentalist” Jane (Simon Baker).
It turned out that one of the accomplices in the crime was the attendant of the gas station that blew up. But the bomber just wanted to find out where Madeline Hightower was hiding so he could reveal her whereabouts to Red John.
Hightower surprises Patrick and tells him that she is going to turn herself in. Fans will remember that she has been framed for murder by someone inside the CBI who is working with Red John. Patrick tells Hightower to give him 48 hours to find the identity of the CBI mole and clear her name. Hightower agrees and Patrick asks Lisbon and the rest of the CBI team for help.
Meanwhile Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) who is busy planning her wedding is shocked to find out that her fiancé Craig is suspected of being Red John’s accomplice.
The wedding plans provided the backdrop for a cute scene in which Patrick walked in on Lisbon as she was trying on her very frilly and very pink bridesmaid’s dress. Patrick obviously likes what he sees but he covers it by telling her that she looks like an angry princess.
Patrick came close to revealing his true feelings for Lisbon at one point while they were investigating the bombing, but he never quite gets it out. And now he may never get the chance because he once again let the hunt for Red John get the better of him.
Red John’s accomplice does actually turn out to be Van Pelt’s fiancé but many fans probably thought it was Agent LaRoche. As usual Patrick figures this out first and tries to warn Lisbon. But Craig shows up at the cabin where Hightower and her children are hiding and Lisbon is shot. When Lisbon tells Patrick that Craig is dead, he asks her to call the last number dialed on Craig’s phone, hoping that whoever answers will be Red John.
Patrick isn’t with Lisbon because he set a trap for Red John in a busy shopping mall. The brave, yet injured Lisbon does as Patrick asks and Red John’s identity is revealed as none other than guest-star Bradley Whitford. And of course, he is sitting just a few feet away from Patrick.
Patrick asks Red John to prove that he is who he says he is. And in a very sad moment, Red John tells Patrick how his wife and daughter smelled. It is this intimate personal detail that pushes Patrick over the edge. Patrick shot Red John, despite his aversion to guns, and then surrenders.
Many questions were answered in this season finale of The Mentalist but fans will have to wait until next season to find out what will happen to Patrick, whether Lisbon survived the shooting, and whether Van Pelt and Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) will get back together now that Craig is out of the picture.
