On tonight’s all new episode of The Vampire Diaries, Elena (Nina Dobrev) starts training to defend herself against Stefan (Paul Wesley) and she has a little help from Ric (Matt Davis). As the students of Mystic Falls High School start their senior year, Caroline (Candice Accola) doesn’t like the fact that Rebecca (Claire Holt) is hanging around. And really who can blame her? Rebecca makes Katherine seem like the girl next door. But you kind of feel bad for Rebecca just a little bit because Klaus (Joseph Morgan) abandoned her.

And speaking of Katherine, she’s busy trying to awaken Michael so that he can kill Klaus. Eventually Michael does wake up and attack Katherine because Michael is a vampire who kills other vampires. But it remains to be seen whether Michael will kill Klaus.

Elena comes up with a plan to lock Stefan up until Klaus is killed and his compulsion on Stefan can be broken. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) agrees to help Elena because he loves her and doesn’t want to see her get hurt. It’s really interesting to see Stefan being the bad guy, while Damon is protecting Elena. Stefan is downright mean to Elena at the bonfire. He torments her when all she wants is to get him to embrace his humanity again.

Stefan’s character is similar to that of Angel (David Boreanaz) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Here’s hoping he doesn’t get a spin-off. There was even a clever reference to Buffy during tonight’s show. Of course it came from Damon. He’s always the source of the show’s witty repartee.

Matt (Zach Roerig) is still seeing Vicki, and he helps her cast a spell to make her spirit stronger. Matt doesn’t know that the price for the spell is Elena’s life. When he finds
out, he goes to Bonnie (Kat Graham) for help. She helps Matt with a spell. Matt says goodbye and she disappears.

But Bonnie is having ghost troubles of her own since Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is still seeing and communicating with Anna. Bonnie is pretty smart, and she knows that Jeremy still has feelings for Anna. Bonnie and Jeremy are good together, if they can work out their issues.

Tyler (Michael Trevino) is being controlled by Klaus, since Klaus is the hybrid that created him. Caroline warns him about this but at the end of the episode Rebecca shows up which can only lead to trouble. And Damon gets attacked by Tyler’s uncle Mason Lockwood, who has mysteriously risen from the grave.

The Vampire Diaries just keeps getting better and better this season. The relationship between Damon and Elena is definitely going somewhere, and it was good to see Elena trying to have fun, even if was pretending.

Tune in next Thursday at 8pm/7c on The CW to see why Mason Lockwood has returned.
