On tonight’s all-new episode of The Vampire Diaries on The CW, Esther throws a party and Elena (Nina Dobrev) is the guest of honor. Elena asks Esther to help kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan).
Meanwhile Ric (Matt Davis) is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries. It’s still not clear who attacked him, but it’s still likely that it was Meredith. She has an alibi, but she’s pretty suspicious.
Matt (Zach Roerig) walks Elena to her car, where she is ambushed by Rebekah (Claire Holt). Rebekah is angry with Elena for killing her. Elijah (Daniel Gilles) shows up in the nick of time and impeccably dressed as usual to save Elena. Elena and Elijah would be good together, if she weren’t preoccupied with her feelings for Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
Stefan and Damon try to discourage Elena from going to the party because they think Esther will try to harm her. Elena tells them that she won’t go to the party but she goes anyway. Caroline (Candice Accola) is surprised when Klaus invites her to the party and gives her a dress to wear for the occasion. Caroline also gets a call from Tyler (Michael
Trevino). Tyler says he loves Caroline and that he is working on to break his
sire bond to Klaus.
She talks to Elena and tells her that she is upset that it was Bonnie (Kat Graham) and not Elena who told her about the kiss. Elena apologizes to Caroline. She tries to convince Caroline to go to the party to act as her bodyguard. Caroline doesn’t want to go until she sees Rebekah asking Matt to the party.
Rebekah plans to kill Matt to get back at Elena for killing her. She asks her brother Cole
to help. He agrees but later Rebekah changes her mind and decides not to kill Matt because he was nice to her.
At the party, everyone looks beautiful. Klaus notices Caroline and flirts with her all night. She asks Klaus to give Tyler back his free will, but he doesn’t seem interested in the idea. Caroline shows impressive moxie when she calls Klaus out for being a homicidal immortal control freak. Later Klaus shows Caroline his artwork and gives her a drawing
that he made of her.
Damon and Stefan are surprised when Elena shows up at the party. They won’t let her out of their sight. She dances with both of them and tries to convince them to let her talk to Esther alone. Klaus and Caroline also dance. He tries to console her about her father’s death. These two characters have interesting chemistry too. But unfortunately Klaus is always trying to kill everyone; and Caroline still has feelings for Tyler. Caroline and Matt also dance and argue about each other’s dates.
Elijah doesn’t trust his mother and he asks Elena to tell him the details of the conversation that she has with Esther. Elena agrees. Fans of The Vampire Diaries will remember that it was Esther who cast a spell and transformed The Originals into vampires. Esther tells Elena that the party is a ruse to bring all of her children together, so she can perform a ritual.
The ritual requires Elena’s blood because she’s the doppelganger. Elena gives Esther her blood, but she doesn’t find out until later that the ritual will kill not just Klaus, but all of The Originals. Esther says that it’s her duty to kill her children because she defied nature when she turned them into vampires.
She puts Elena’s blood in champagne, not unlike when Mikael (Sebastian Roche) put blood in the wine that turned them in the first place. Once The Originals drink the wine, the ritual will be complete.
Elena lies to Elijah about her conversation with Esther. She should’ve told him the truth. All of The Originals drink the champagne during the toast. Damon is angry with Elena for showing up at the party.
They argue and he professes his love to her. Elena doesn’t respond the way she should, and Damon gets understandably angry and intervenes when Cole attacks Matt.
After the party, Stefan takes Elena home. She confides in him that she feels guilty (and she should) about lying to Elijah. Stefan tries to cheer her up by reminding her that Esther’s plan is the only way to kill Klaus.
Elena tries to convince Stefan to start caring about her again, but he refuses because he says the emotions are too painful for him. And speaking of pain, Damon tries to forget his by hooking up with Rebekah.
This was one of the best episodes so far this season. The Originals and all their relationships with other characters make the show so much more interesting. It will be interesting to see whether or not Esther’s ritual will go according to plan. But if The Originals do go, they won’t go quietly.
Next week, The Originals kidnap Elena presumably because they found out about her involvement in the ritual.
Tune in next week for the next exciting episode Thursday at 8 p.m./7c on The CW. And don’t forget to check out the cast’s sexy EntertainmentWeekly covers.
