The Vampire Diaries season 4 is going to see Elena become a vampire after she had Stefan save Matt first and Bonnie deal with the aftermath of the spell she did that saved everyone and put Klaus in Tyler’s body.
Vampire Diaries Season 4 Spoilers
The Hollywood Reporter talked to executive producer Julie Plec about what’s coming up in season 4 after Bonnie’s spell, and she teased that doing the spell “comes back to bite her in the butt a little bit. …the witches aren’t necessarily too happy with Bonnie (Kat Graham) dabbling in the dark side so she goes through a pretty rough time in the first episode as she tries to do what she does best, which is save her friends and finds the witches pushing back a little too hard.” So while her friends can see why she did the spell she did—even though it does mean that Klaus can have some fun in Tyler’s body—she’s still going to be facing consequences. She saved everyone, but at what price? Will the witches “pushing back” be what keeps Bonnie from going to the dark side, as has been speculated could happen this season?
With Bonnie dealing with that and Elena dealing with her transition in The Vampire Diaries season 4, Plec did say, “It’ll take the girls a couple of episodes before they realize that they can go through it together. I think that the good news is that Elena’s friendships will remain solid as she herself is crumbling a little bit.” The girls’ friendship has been strained in the past, but it does sound like when they do come together, it will be solid this season. It might be for the best for them to go through what they’re going through alone in the beginning, but perhaps they could end up being of help for one another. At least Elena will have her friends by her side as she goes through this tough time, even if some people will obviously have different points of view.
As for Matt and Elena’s friendship since she died to save him, Matt is going to feel guilty. He’ll have that “survivor’s guilt,” and Plec teased, “We’re going to see Matt be a champion for Elena,” calling that “a nice friendship.” Plec did acknowledge that “as a human he is definitely a blood source,” and with Elena having to get used to being a vampire, well, it sounds like it wouldn’t be surprising if she takes a bite. Even if that does happen, Matt has survived up to this point, so if she does bite him, it doesn’t seem likely it will be anything too serious. Since he is going to be feeling that “survivor’s guilt,” it’s possible he offers his blood up as she gets used to being a vampire. Anything could happen on this show.
That and Damon’s problems with Matt won’t be the only things the human’s going through. There is the matter of Rebekah, and if the season 3 finale proved anything, it was a lesson in how to not win a guy over. Plec did say that “Rebekah, poor thing, is still harboring her secret fling for Matt – and it isn’t so secret any more.” Though she is going to give apologizing a try, “he pretty much tells her to go to hell.” What she needs to do is “change her behavior and go about it a different way.” While sometimes you could feel bad for Rebekah in a way—the poor girl just wanted to go to a dance!—in this instance, she is in the wrong, and it does seem crazy to think Matt can just forgive that. Rebekah has a long way to go before she can end up on anyone’s good side after what she did, and it should be interesting to see how that plays out over the season. Will she stay in Mystic Falls the entire season, or could she decide to leave at one point?
