‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 4 Spoilers: Graduating, the Cure, and College?

The Vampire Diaries season 4 is not only heading for the seniors’ graduation, but it’s also all about the cure. Will everyone graduate? Will someone take the cure? What’s the plan for season 5?

"Stand by Me" Photo: Annette Brown/The CWTVGuide.com talked to executive producer Julie Plec about what’s coming up, and she gave answers to those three questions. First of all, there is the matter of those attending graduation—there aren’t exactly many family members left around, something that Elena is going to address in the second to last episode of the season as she fills out graduation announcements. But audience members aside, will everyone be there to receive diplomas? According to Plec, “Definitely not all of our wayward, delinquent students will be present when it comes time to collect their diplomas,” and that’s because “graduation falls right in the middle of a crucial supernatural time.” What else would you expect from a Vampire Diaries graduation? But of course you have to wonder if everyone will survive until graduation. They’ve made it this far, but will everyone have a future after this “crucial supernatural time” coming up?

And as for that cure, which everyone’s been trying to get their hands on for various reasons, Plec has said that the cure is “ingested by a vampire” in “one of the finale’s final moments.” But which vampire? Rebekah has already thought she had taken it, but could she take the real one in the finale? Will Stefan and Damon’s plan work regarding Elena and she decides to take it? Could they force her to take it? Plec’s exact words are that it’s “ingested by a vampire,” so that doesn’t necessarily mean that the vampire in question takes it completely willingly. That may depend on which Elena they’re dealing with, whether she has her humanity turned off or not, which could depend on whatever plan Stefan and Damon are going to be working on over the next few episodes.

As for season 5, some characters will be attending Whitmore College, while some “may choose to run off to Europe, New Orleans or parts unknown,” Plec teased. Could the New Orleans location also depend on what people think of “The Originals,” which is introducing a possible spinoff? Of course the main question is going to be who makes it to season 5—and who’s still (or once again) human.
