The Vampire Diaries season 3 ended with Elena forcing Stefan to save Matt first, leading to her death. However, since she had vampire blood in her at the time, that wasn’t the end for her. What is Elena transitioning going to mean for the humans in her life?
Vampire Diaries Season 4 Spoilers
According to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec has said, “I think that’s the worst tragedy of all is that they plotted together to get her out of town so she wouldn’t have to be part of this life. And now as a result of having been on that bridge at that moment, Matt is basically responsible in his own way for her being the one thing she never wanted to be. He’s going to carry that very heavily. It’s going to take his some time to get past that.” However, if not for Elena forcing Stefan to save Matt before her, Matt would be dead.
Though Elena’s going to become a vampire, which she didn’t want, there could be a conversation where she tells Matt she’d rather have this life than one where he died. After all, the two are good friends, and the finale did show that their friendship is one of the best parts of the show. Whether or not she knew she had vampire blood in her could greatly impact what comes next—and how everyone reacts to her transition. Hopefully there is a conversation between Elena and Matt once she gets through the transition and has adjusted a bit.
Meanwhile, Jeremy has done a lot to protect Elena, and now, he’s going to have to find a way to deal with these changes his sister’s going through. The end of season 3 was not an easy one for the Gilberts. First they lost Alaric, then he came back as their new enemy, and then they lost him again (leading to Jeremy’s goodbye with him). That’s a lot to go through for a teenager in high school, and it’s just going to get worse in The Vampire Diaries season 4.
Plec also talked about what Elena’s transition means for Jeremy: “I would say certainly Jeremy, who would never want this for his sister, is going to have a real, real visceral reaction against Rebekah for what [she] did. There might be a little bit of retribution.” Uh-oh, could Jeremy end up in danger because of that attempt at “retribution”? Could Jeremy’s anger be enough to give him the advantage and lead to Rebekah somehow being in danger? You do have to wonder about what Klaus (in Tyler’s body and once he’s out of it) could mean to this situation. Could Jeremy end up getting his attention in his anger and reaction about Rebekah’s role in this?
