‘The Walking Dead’ Season 3 Spoilers: The Governor, Prison, and Michonne

The Walking Dead has begun production for its third season, and there are plenty of teases about what to expect in the new episodes. AMCtv.com has posted an interview with executive producer Robert Kirkman in the first of a series from the set.

They were running out of gas and ended up setting up camp on the side of the road. As the final shot showed, in the distance is the setting of the third season: the prison. Kirkman calls it “one of the most impressive looking things that’s ever been put together for a show.” It’s something that fans of the comics have been looking forward to, and even if you haven’t read the comics, you have to admit that final shot of the prison was pretty cool and such a tease going into the break between seasons.

Robert Kirkman said, “It’s important to us to maintain the tone of the show. Thus far [the characters] have been out on the road, desperate and living in the heat, and we don’t want it to be that they’re relaxing in this safe place now.” They don’t have a safe place to stay yet, and with the upcoming season introducing the Governor and Woodbury, once again there’s the threat of other survivors. That happened in the middle of the second season with Dave and Tony, who wanted to be brought to the farm. Now the survivors are the ones looking for a safe place, and they’re going to end up facing a whole new danger, as Kirkman teases, that while the survivors know what to expect from walkers, “humans, however, do not follow any rules and will always do something that surprises you and are capable of doing things far worse than trying to eat you…We’re definitely going to be seeing a lot of horrible things.”

The Walking Dead season 2 finale did briefly introduce Michonne to the television series, and Danai Gurira will be portraying her in the third season. Kirkman has said that she’s “doing an amazing job” with sword training, and “the originals of the sword will be revealed.” She’s going to be “using a sword that we specially designed for the show.” After her introduction, which may have very well been the highlight of the entire season, it’s hard not to be excited about what Michonne will bring to the third season—especially since Andrea’s with her.

Finally, Kirkman did say “this season is absolutely going to blow people away” and with 16 episodes, they “are going to get to tell bigger stories, and tell more stories, and get into the characters a lot more.” The first season was short—only 6 episodes—and the second, while 13 episodes, did seem lacking in some departments. Hopefully the third season with more episodes will be full of what fans are expecting to see with everything that’s coming up.
