The War Between Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan Heats Up

Never the best of friends, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan now seem to be going out of their way to make their relationship as awkward as possible.

Shahrukh in particular seems to be drawing a lot of attention to the conflict between them by purposely skipping the IIFA (the International Indian Film Awards) ceremony in Singapore. This in itself wouldn’t be considered strange behavior except that Shahrukh is the brand ambassador for the event. His absence will be deeply felt by many.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/08/Salman_Khan_BSE11.jpgCoincidentally he timed his exit from the awards to coincide with Salman’s announcement that he would be attending for the first time in several years. SRK gave the excuse that he would be in London shooting for the still-unnamed Yash Raj film he’s been working on all year, but that excuse seems weak given that his co-stars, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, will be attending IIFA and will re-join the shoot the next day. Why couldn’t Shahrukh have done the same? Even if it wasn’t his intention he made it look like he wanted to avoid seeing Salman.

Fans spoiling for a fight don’t have to look too far to find one though; SRK and Sallu may not be coming face to face at IIFA but they’re certainly squaring off on the football pitch. Shahrukh, who owns a majority share of the IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders, is now dipping his toe into football (soccer) ownership as well. He’s expressed interest in taking over partial ownership of Dempo SC, a Goa-based football team.

And Salman? He’s keen to get involved in football as well, but rather than take over teams he’s expressed an interest in helping develop young talent, building new pitches, and aiding the training of current players. Seems a much more reasonable (and workable) method of building up the sport in India than SRK’s plan.

In fact if Salman Khan were so inclined he might use his interest in football to patch up his relationship with the Bachchans. Abhishek Bachchan is a devoted football fan (and a passionate supporter of Chelsea FC) and would probably make a perfect partner in the quest to help develop footballing talent in India.

If only Salman and Shahrukh could set aside their differences and come together on this topic. Sport brings so much joy to so many people–surely that’s a worthy enough cause to just let bygones be bygones, even if only temporarily.
