For many, he known for his roles in Buzz Lightyear or Santa/Scott Calvin. He has shown his acting and comedic talents in the Toy Story movies, The Santa Clause movies and several others since his television sitcom ended a decade ago. Now, though, Tim Allen may be returning to the land of TV.
The actor, who last starred on television in the ’90s as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor in Home Improvement, is in talks to return to the small screen. According to Entertainment Weekly, Allen is considering returning to ABC “to star in the comedy pilot Man Up, which has just been given a put pilot order… That means the network would incur substantial penalties if the pilot doesn’t make it to air.”
This will be the first time the actor has returned to the small screen since the 1999 end of Home Improvement. That show had run from 1991-1999 and had won multiple awards and been nominated for dozens more during its run.
The new series, Man Up, is described as being about “a man ‘fighting for his manhood in a world of women.'” With such a description, it is hard to get much of a handle on whether the show will be worth watching.
Some of what made Home Improvement a success was that it was centered around a family, was fairly family-friendly in terms of themes and language, and had a good supporting cast.
If this new show departs from the family-centered path, it is doubtful that it will be very successful. The fact is, Tim Allen often is at his best in roles he is a family guy (or a toy, but that is another story). Hopefully, this new show will “get” that.
From the information that is currently available about Man Up, it is difficult to tell whether this is one that will fly or flop.
