Ever wonder how Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi keeps the weight off while filming the popular TV cooking show? Well, she doesn’t.
Lakshmi took some time out from taste-testing this afternoon to speak with press, including Gather News, about the upcoming season of Top Chef: Texas, which premieres next Wednesday (Nov. 2) on Bravo.
Among the juicy tidbits, Lakshmi shared how she battles the bulge and tries to stay in shape during filming because no matter how she slices it, weight gain is inevitable.

Lakshmi’s top-secret workout advice is to “carry a jump rope in my suitcase,” so she always has an exercise tool handy that she can use anytime, anywhere between filming and traveling.
She’s also an avid stair climber, and always manages to find a staircase of some sort around her hotel to “run up and down” between scarfing down gourmet dishes.
Still, she admits to packing on the pounds regardless, but thanks to a little TV magic, viewers don’t notice it.
“I do go up in dress sizes. I gain 10 to 15 pounds during any given season, it’s just that my wardrobe person is really good. I get bigger dresses, that’s all. Unfortunately, what takes me six weeks to gain, takes me 10 to 12 weeks to lose!”
Over the course of many Top Chef seasons, Lakshmi says she’s learned to take “smaller bites on set” and not demolish every delicious dish in sight — although it’s tempting. Weight gain or not, however, she’s confident that she and lead judge Tom Colicchio are “really, really good” at their jobs on the cooking competition:
“We both have an immense capacity to put food away!”
