TOP STORIES 12-16-2008: Caroline Kennedy seeking Clinton's Senate Seat; Police foil Paris department store terror plot; Palin, Fey have top quotes of 2008; Obama cabinet picks for Interior and Education

  • A few more cabinet announcements are likely to come soon from the Obama transition team, including Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colorado) for Secretary of the Interior, and Arne Duncan for Secretary of Education.  Duncan is currently the head of Chicago's public school system.
  • The Yale Book of Quotations is out with its top ten quotes of 2008.  Here are the top three: (3) "We have sort of become a nation of whiners." – Phil Gramm, economic advisor to the McCain campaign, (2) "All of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years." – Sarah Palin, when asked what magazines or newspapers she reads, (1) "I can see Russia from my house!" – Tina Fey, impersonating Sarah Palin.
  • Caroline Kennedy announced that she is actively seeking an appointment to fill Hillary Clinton's vacant Senate seat from New York.  This has sparked a more intense debate about her qualifications for the job.  Do you think Caroline is qualified, or is her only asset her last name?
  • Police in France have squashed a terrorist plot to blow up a Paris department store.  Using trained dogs, they found 5 sticks of unexploded dynamite in a bathroom at Printemps Haussmann.  A group called the Afghan Revolutionary Front claimed responsibility.
