True Blood‘s season 5 finale began where the penultimate episode left off, with Russell heading for the fairies. Though they tried to blast him back, it didn’t work, and he kept coming. But then Eric stopped him. Was that it for Russell?
Is Russell Really Dead?
Yes, Eric killed Russell, but was that the last fans will see of Denis O’Hare? Alan Ball told TVLine, “He’s gone. We may see him in flashbacks, but he bit it.” Russell may not have been a good guy, but O’Hare was so good in the role. Fortunately, this is a show where flashbacks aren’t out of the ordinary, so he could be back next season or beyond, which is good news.
However, it does seem likely that Steve will return at some point in True Blood season 6. Ball did say that “he definitely seems like that would be a person to bring back,” but he isn’t the boss next season (Mark Hudis is). It would be hard to imagine them just leaving Steve’s story where it ended, though he could just go into hiding for some time before showing up, and given the time frame of seasons for the HBO drama, it actually wouldn’t be strange if he didn’t show up until close to the season’s end or in a possible season 7. The question does remain what side Steve will end up on. With Russell and the chancellors dead, will he try to align himself with Sookie and the others? Would he try to be on Bill’s side, even though it’s uncertain just what’s going to happen with Bill in season 6? They could have Steve decide to just stay out of the way and stay alive for now. Will he see what Luna did on television while she was him? It could be interesting to see the fallout of that and his reaction.
