Trump President 2012: Did Obama’s Birth Certificate Stop Him?

Donald Trump has decided not to run for the Republican nomination for the 2012 presidential election. “After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the office of the Presidency,” Trump said in his announcement. Trump boasted about his ability to win if he decided to run, based on his ability to rank highly in early polling. “Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.

Trump thanked the millions of people who supported him in the polls and encouraged him to run. He assured his supporters that he would continue to voice his opinions and “help shape our politicians’ thoughts.” Mr. Trump has quickly become a political lightning rod and has regular spots on news programs, especially on Fox News.

But why would Trump quit his campaign before it officially began? It could be that his primary issue, Obama’s birth certificate, has lost all public interest now that Obama produced the artifact. Public polls show that Trump lost a lot of his support soon after Obama released the document. Quinnipiac University’s May 4 national poll found that 58 percent of voters would never vote for Trump, including 32 percent of Republicans.

Perhaps Trump feels he is not yet ready for the rigors of a campaign. There was concern that his support for Democrat candidates in the past, as well as some personal issues, would have made it difficult for him to win the Republican nomination. But the unofficial campaign for “Trump President 2012″ was gaining interest from diverse segments of Republican voters, from conservative talk-show hosts to Franklin Graham and other religious leaders. In the end, he did not want to be the savior of the nation to breathe hope into a failing system.

Since he was certain of victory, at least in his own mind, his withdrawal from the race can mean only two things: he believes there is no hope in solving the country’s problems; or he has found a candidate he can support to solve the problems. But maybe Trump is not truly certain of victory and thinks he would lose to Obama without the birth certificate issue. Regardless, running for political office is not what he wants to do. He can spend his time succeeding in the marketplace of business and causing a stir in the marketplace of political ideas.
