Tymoshenko calls on Ukrainians to block ratification of Black Sea fleet deal

Thousands of supporters hear Tymoshenko call for larger crowd to protest on April 27.

KYIV, Apr. 24, 2010 (Ukrainian News/UBO) — Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (BYuT), is calling on Ukrainians and parliamentary opposition forces to prevent the Verkhovna Rada from ratifying the agreement on extending the Russian Black Sea Fleet lease on its Sevastopol base until 2042 and on pegging the base rent to the gas price for Ukraine, Tymoshenko said, speaking at the rally outside the Parliament today. The ratification vote is slated for Tuesday, April 27, and Tymoshenko hopes to marshal a huge crowd around the parliament in opposition to the move.

“The ratification on Tuesday should meet strong resistance in the Parliament. Today’s rally of activists is the first step towards this. I ask you to come with dozens of people who believe in Ukraine to this square at 10:00 a.m. sharp on Tuesday,” Tymoshenko said addressing protesters.

The agreement signed is inadmissible for Ukraine, she emphasized.
“The agreement is inadmissible because we are turning to be a block country, but not in the format defined by the Ukrainian people. Since a military base begins with the word “military”, we do not need any alien war in our territory,” the BYuT leader said.

Tymoshenko urged leaders of all oppositional parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political forces to unite and not to allow ratifying the agreement prolonging the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s stay in Ukraine.
