Uninvited ‘Guests’ Poach Free Breakfast from Local Hotels

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but no one said anything about a free breakfast. It seems that hotels are seeing a rise in uninvited “guests” helping themselves to the complimentary bagel and juice bar.

At one Miami Hampton Inn, Alfonso Tobenas, the front desk clerk, has gotten wise to locals that pose as guests in order to fill up on early morning carbs.

“It is what it is, bro, times are tough and they’re hungry,” Tobenas says. “They’re just trying to beat the system and save a buck. The first time you’re going to get away with it, the second and third time I’m going to ask you to leave.”

It looks as if some road warriors already use this trick. Your driving cross-country and feeling a tad hungry as the sun rises. Take just about any off-ramp and right there is your free breakfast. Put on some flip-flops and slap inside and walk right up to a meal, on the hotels dime.

Hunger is becoming more well-known to many more people in this country, but a hotel is not a soup kitchen. Tough economic times are bringing out the creative side of those willing to bend the rules a bit. But sometimes they break them and convince themselves that it is justifiable.
