US News and World Report has released their annually updated college rankings for 2011, and schools in Massachusetts took many of the top slots.  That includes Harvard University, which is ranked the top national university; and Williams College, ranked the top national liberal arts college.  MIT – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – came in as the #7 national university, and Amherst (#2), Wellesley (#4), and Smith (#14) Colleges all placed very high as national liberal arts colleges.

These rankings really seem to matter around this time of year, because so many entering-seniors in high school are choosing where to apply and later, where to actually attend.  However, any list that ranks higher education institutions is controversial.

Similarly, Forbes Magazine released their annual list of college rankings, which saw many of the same familiar schools near the top of the list, but unlike US News’ college rankings, is not split into separate lists for large universities and smaller liberal arts colleges.  Forbes rated Princeton at #1 (which shared the top spot in US News with Harvard last year).
