US Open results from Monday, August 29 are coming in already. These US Open results will prove that the sport can even overcome Hurricane Irene and that New York City is ready to persevere once again. First round matches will be taking place in both the men’s and women’s brackets, allowing some of the lower seeds to finally get back on to the court at a Major.
The first completed match of the day was Flavio Cipolla of Italy beating Kei Nishikori of Japan in two sets. Cipolla went up 6-4, 6-2 before Nishikori decided to retire from the match. On the women’s side of the brackets, Monica Niculescu (ROU) beat Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Those are just the first matches of the day, and some of the better players will be taking the court as live television coverage begins Monday afternoon.
The No. 1 seed on the Men’s side is Novak Djokovic, and he will play Conor Niland in round one. He will then take on the winner of the Pere Riba vs. Carlos Berlocq match in round two. The No. 2 seed is Rafael Nadal, who will play Andrey Golubev in his first round match before playing the winner of Nicolas Mahut vs. Robert Farah.
The women’s side has Caroline Wozniacki as the No. 1 seed, and she will go up against Nuria Llagostera Vives to make it into round two. The No. 2 seed on the women’s side is Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who goes up against Stephanie Foretz Gacon in her first round match. Another notable player is Venus Williams, who is unseeded and will play against Vesna Dolonts of Russia. The No. 3 seed is Maria Sharapova, who will get to play Heather Watson of Great Britain.
There might not be as many exciting matches in round one of the tournament this year, but due to the way players were seeded, there could be some great matches in the later rounds.
Who do you think will emerge as the big surprise at the 2011 US Open? Do you think that an American can win either the men’s or women’s title? How do you think the US Open results will look by the end of day one?
