Popular vampire author Anne Rice has quit Christianity. It sounds like a headline straight out of tabloids, but the best-selling author of Interview With a Vampire and other novels announced on her Facebook page that she was quitting Christianity.

She wrote:

“For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten …years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

On Facebook? Quitting smoking, maybe, but quitting your religion, well, shoudln’t it be a bit more personal or private? But this is the world we live in now.

Later she wrote on her page:

“As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of …Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”

A bold move, because a statement like this might adversely affect her book sales. Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks after Natalie Maines criticized President Bush. Oh, wait, that actually revitalized the Chicks’ career, turning them on to a more progressive crowd.

So, maybe this is a good thing for Rice. At any rate, good for her for standing up for what she truly believes, and a quick perusal of the comments on her Facebook page seem to agree.
