Oh, mother! Entertainment Weekly reports that Vera Farmiga has scored the iconic role of Norman Bates’ dear old mom, Mrs. Bates, on the new A&E series Bates Motel, based on Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Vera Farmiga 2, 2011The TV series will be a prequel to the 1960 film masterpiece, focusing on a younger Norman Bates and his relationship with his mother, Norma Louise, before she turned into a creepy, withered old prune sitting in the basement. The role of Norman himself has yet to be cast, but any actor should feel lucky to play off the talented and accomplished Farmiga.

It should be interesting to see what she does with the character, considering that Mrs. Bates started off in Psycho already dead. (If that spoils the movie for you, you must have been really out of the loop for the last 50 years.) She’s never really been portrayed as a living person, except in the little-seen TV movie Psycho IV: The Beginning.

So the field is wide open for Vera Farmiga to put her own stamp on this archetype of the clinging, controlling mother, one of the most infamous in cinema history. Farmiga, acclaimed for her work in movies like The Departed and Up in the Air, brings a realism and intensity to everything she does. No doubt she’ll do the same with Mrs. Bates—and she might just “go a little mad.”

Bates Motel will premiere on A&E next year.
