Woody Allen does what he does best in Vicky Cristina Barcelona: He gives us an interesting story with charming characters and great dialogue, all the while showing off a place like few can. He’s shown us his New York, London, Paris, Venice, and now, Barcelona. If you haven’t been there, watch this film and you’ll put it on your short list.

Name: Vicky Cristina Barcelona

AKA (mine): Yes Country for Young Women

Writer/Director: Woody Allen

Cast (the few): Javier Bardem (sans the bad hairdo he sported in No Country for Old Men), Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

The Story: Americans Vicky and Cristina visit Barcelona for the summer. Vicky is traditional and engaged to marry a suit back in the States, and Cristina is liberal and unattached. In Barcelona, they meet artist Juan Antonio, who’s still involved with his ex-wife Maria Elena.

More Details: PG-13, 1 hs 37 min,

Why Watch It: Despite being a bit incomplete in the development of polyamory as a central theme in the film, a borderline stereotypical portrayal of Latin artists, and a slight overuse of voiceover, Vicky Cristina Barcelona has solid performances and offers a great story, entertainment with plenty of eye candy that will make you think. And smile.
