Wal-Mart has just released iPad and iPhone apps to improve shoppers’ experiences and help them save money. It’s Wal-Mart’s version of a high-tech loyalty card, but without the extra piece of plastic.
Wal-Mart’s App for iPad & iPhone
The Wal-Mart app has multiple functions, including a bar code scanner, redeemable coupons, Apple’s Siri voice command, and a budgeting tool. As customers shop the store, they can scan their list and get real-time, cumulative totals. They can also specify their favorite items, create lists, and share product information and reviews via email.
The iPhone and iPad app also has the capability to show shoppers where each item on their list is in the store, and it maps the most efficient route to get to everything on their lists. Before heading to the store, users can use the iPhone app to see if the item is in stock or check to see if it’s available online.
It Works on Android, Too!
Wal-Mart’s Senior Vice President of Mobile & Digital, Gibu Thomas, views the iPhone app as a tool that develops a “personal relationship” between Wal-Mart and its customers. Users running the app will be greeted by name, they’ll receive guidance on navigating the store, and they’ll get product recommendations and coupons based on their preferences.
As it turns out, the app isn’t just for Apple users. There’s also a free Wal-Mart app for Android users, too. However, it doesn’t have as many features as the Apple apps. The Wal-Mart apps for Android and the iPad are currently available, but the iPhone app is still waiting for Apple certification.

Getting in and out of Wal-Mart in the shortest amount of time possible is always a good thing. An app that improves store navigation and helps customers find the items they’re looking for in record time will help shoppers minimize the time they have to spend in a Wal-Mart store. As the holidays get closer and stores get more crowded, Wal-Mart customers are likely to appreciate the extra help from their iPhone app.
