Walter Cronkite died tonight at 7:42 p.m., at the age of 92, from cerebral vascular disease.

Cronkite was the anchor of CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981, when Dan Rather took over. At the end of the news each night, Cronkite said, “And that’s the way it is…”

I was only 10 years old in 1962, and I avoided watching the news unless it was a school assignment for current events.  Or if there was a major news announcement.

Perhaps, to me, one of Cronkite’s biggest announcements was when President Kennedy died on November 22, 1963.

Or the moon landing on July 20, 1969.  Here he is talking about that in 2007.

He continued reporting for CBS and other networks until 2008.

He was a true professional.  It’s too bad that our news anchors today have not learned to be more like him.
