Gretchen Lee Bourquin posted this recipe for split pea soup the other day, and it sounded so good, I knew it was time for a pot of it! http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977512614

1 T butter
1 carrot, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 cup diced ham
2 potatoes, peeled and diced
2 cups split peas, rinsed
salt and pepper to taste
6 cups chicken broth

Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Add butter. Stir in carrot and onion, cooking til softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in ham and potato, cooking another few minutes. Stir in peas and salt and pepper and mix well.http://media-files.gather.com/images/d491/d330/d745/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

Add pea mixture to slow cooker on high heat. Add broth; stir and cook 4 hours.http://media-files.gather.com/images/d488/d330/d745/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

I served the soup with saltines and a couple slices of the bread.
