Gay and Lesbian couples on the west coast may finally have a place to get married. Washington state is now on their way to becoming the seventh state to allow same-sex marriage. Currently, several states on the east coast as well as Washington, D.C. allow the non-traditional marriages or civil unions. On the west coast, however, California has been in the news over the last few years as it has tried to ban these types of marriages completely.

On Tuesday, a California appeals court found the ban to be unconstitutional, but the battle is not over, and the Supreme Court could be next in line to make their decision on what is known as Proposition 8. In the meantime, many same-sex couples are celebrating and enjoying what they consider to be a milestone.

Washington state’s new law won’t take effect until June, and in the meantime, The National Organization for Marriage has reportedly said it will seek to gather 120,577 signatures that would possibly require voters to make the final decision. So, it is likely that gays and lesbians in Washington state could have a long road ahead of them.

The Federal government allows states to decide if they will allow same-sex marriages or not. In many states where these laws are being considered, both Republicans and Democrats do support the unions. However, it isn’t just politicians that are being supportive. Goldman Sachs’ CEO, Lloyd Blankfein, has recently become a spokesperson for same-sex marriage and is working to encourage more and more legislators to join him.

Although, seven out of fifty states may not seem like progress, the movement for gay and lesbian unions is still in its early stages. With the help of politicians and other prominent figures, same-sex marriage could become a normal and widely accepted activity across the United States within the next decade.
