White House officials handed the Syrian government a verbal lashing today over the violence being perpetrated towards its own citizens during what Syria says is a “crack down on anti-government demonstrators.”

Officals gave support for the Syrian people and acknowledged “That Syrian security forces “continue to shoot, assault and arrest demonstrators and political prisoners remain detained.”

Recent violence continues in the largely abandoned town of Jisr al-Shughour, which is close to the Turkish border. Witnesses have said that Syrians are being gunned down indiscriminately by government helicopters.

Thousands of Syrians have fled the country across the Syria-Turkey border where Turkish officials have a refugee camp set up. Officials say they have enough room for up to 5,000 refugees.

Protests and violence broke out in March within the country, since, countless numbers on both sides have been killed. The Syrian government maintains that they are fighting against terrorist gangs within Syria that are harming citizens.

White House officials said it will support a U.N. Security Council Resolution condemning the Syrian government’s action.
