In case you missed the drawing, the winning Mega Millions numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46, with a Mega Ball number of 23 for the $656,000,000 jackpot.

What are the Odds of Getting Struck By Lightning?

According to ABC News, the chance of getting struck by lightning is 1 in 750,000, but the chance of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is even greater—1 in 176 million! Those odds didn’t stop Bill Isles of Wichita, Kansas, who took a chance and bought three Mega Millions tickets the day before the historic drawing.

What happened next is truly amazing! On the way to his car, Isles said he commented to a friend: “I’ve got a better chance of getting struck by lightning” than winning the lottery. Later at about 9:30 p.m., Isles was standing in the back yard of his Wichita duplex, when he saw a flash and heard a boom—lightning. “It threw me to the ground quivering,” Isles said in a telephone interview with Reuters on Saturday. “It kind of scrambled my brain and gave me an irregular heartbeat.”

Isles is a weather spotter for the National Weather Service, and was doing what weather spotters do best in bad weather—spotting the weather! The Kansas man struck by lightning said it could have been much worse. Luckily for Isles, he was on his ham radio when it happened, and another spotter called 911.

Although Isles was quite shaken by the whole ordeal, he wasn’t hurt badly. He was kept overnight for observation and discharged the following day. So Isles did what most people do when they feel incredibly lucky. He bought ten more Mega Millions tickets for the drawing!

What are the odds of getting hit by lightning again? Apparently Isles was the 1 in 750,000 chances that night. This story had a so-so happy ending. Isles lived through the lightning strike, but he didn’t end up being the lucky Kansas Mega Millions winner!

The record-breaking Mega Millions jackpot was initially estimated to be about $640,000,000, but increased to $656,000,000 after heavy ticket sales drove the amount of the jackpot even higher.
