Why Is Jennifer Lawrence So Fat?

No, that’s not an insult, it’s just a sad commentary on the entertainment industry’s absurdly unrealistic notions of female beauty. In an interview with Elle magazine, beautiful Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence says that by Hollywood standards she is basically seen as fat, apparently because she’s got a healthy, voluptuous body. Most women would probably kill to have a body like hers, but tell that to the powers that be.

“In Hollywood, I’m obese,” she says. “I’m considered a fat actress. I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach.” Fortunately, this is not what Lawrence really thinks of herself; she seems perfectly aware of how ridiculous such an idea is. In the magazine’s December issue, for which Lawrence graces the cover, the sexy 22-year-old discusses perceptions of weight in the industry and how she’s never going to starve herself for a role. She doesn’t want to be a bad role model for young girls who look up to her character Katniss.

And Lawrence is not coming up with this out of nowhere—it’s real. When The Hunger Games was released earlier this year, even some movie critics, clearly infected by Hollywood disease, implied (or said outright) that she looked too heavy.

Of course, it’s the height of irony that Lawrence is talking about this to a fashion magazine that itself often perpetuates some of the impossible ideals of thinness and makes perfectly “normal”-looking, attractive women feel bad about themselves. It’s great that Elle is publishing Lawrence’s words, and hopefully young girls and women who read them will be encouraged by her example. But chances are, it still won’t change the industry’s overall attitude.

That Lawrence can brush this off and still succeed in Hollywood—and in such a big way—shows that she is not just pretty but pretty grounded as well.
