Will Gov. Rick Scott Succeed in Disobeying the Healthcare Law?

For years you’ve heard that the South will rise again. Well, now it’s happened in Florida, a.k.a. the United States of Rick Scott, when on July 6, Governor Scott once again told Obamacare to shove it. Scott’s Friday statements echoed those statements made by his spokesman last week, “Florida is not going to implement Obamacare. We are not going to expand Medicaid, and we’re not going to implement exchanges.”

Rick Scott

Tea Party Republican Scott has long been opposed to President Obama’s signature healthcare legislation. Scott has also made his contempt widely known for other laws designed to benefit the poor and vulnerable and for Obama-sanctioned programs in general. For example, last year Scott rejected $2.4 billion in federal funds for a high-speed train which would have connected Tampa and Orlando and was estimated to create more than 20,000 local jobs.

Before the Affordable Care Act was passed, Scott was already deeply embroiled in battle with the Obama administration. The Justice Department demanded that Scott stop purging Florida voter rolls in violation of federal law. When Scott responded with a defiant letter of refusal, the feds brought suit.

Rick Scott apparently thinks he has the luxury of cherry-picking the laws of the land which he and Florida will follow. Looks like Scott’s vigilantism extends to far more than just his cowboy get-up, and he’s got company in high places. If Obama is reelected, America may just have itself another Confederacy on the horizon.
