There is no doubt that Islamophobic people exist. But in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, the palpable fear of some that if the perpetrators were Muslim, Islamophobes would be roaming the streets targeting innocent Muslim families is unfounded.
Brendan O’Neill from the Telegraph wrote a must-read editorial that refutes the silly notion that mobs of Islamophobes would emerge in the wake of the Boston attacks, should the attackers turn out to be radical Islamists. One hears about it relentlessly from democratic officials, journalists, and college professors: Most Muslims are peaceful. Here is a newsflash: Conservatives do not think Muslim equates to radical Islam, just like being white does not equate to being in the Ku Klux Klan, or being black means one is a card-carrying member of the New Black Panther Party.
The irrational fear is not based in facts. O’Neill writes, “even before we knew who was responsible, there was media hand wringing over the masses’ potentially intolerant response.” And he points to David Sirota’s “infamous” article from Salon that ridiculously asserts that due to “white male privilege,” if a white man would turn out to be the culprit, the societal response would be diminished, as white men would not be “collectively denigrated/targeted.” How silly.
O’Neill hits it out of the park when he asks, “But where is this Islamophobic mob? Where are these marauding Muslim-haters undergoing a post-Boston freakout?” They are, he says, “a figment of liberal observers’ imaginations.”
Indeed, he points out, the FBI statistics for crimes against Muslims are low. Very low, in comparison to crimes against other groups, like Jewish people, who sadly are the brunt of the vast majority of religious-based hate crimes. The anti-Islamophobia lobby, he opines, only “poses as the implacable opponent of bigotry, yet it spreads a bigoted view of ordinary white folk as so volatile, so brimming with fury, that they are one terrorist bombing away from transforming into an anti-Muslim pogrom.” It seems as if there is bigotry; but it is aimed at white men.
