Very few people can imagine the kind of shock that 60-year-old Valerie Spruill of Doylestown, Ohio, must have experienced when she learned that her late husband was also her father. One of the most astonishing things about this story is that Valerie believes a number of people already knew this secret, which begs the question: Why didn’t anyone tell her that Percy Spruill was her father before she married him? While it isn’t clear why family members weren’t forthcoming with this information prior to the marriage, Valerie says she did hear whispered rumors concerning their union. Six years after her husband/father died at the age of 60, in 2004, Valerie’s uncle finally broke the news to her, as reported by The Huffington Post.

This was not the first time Valerie had been deceived about familial connections. When she was 3 months old, her biological mother, who Valerie describes as a “night lady” sent her to live with her grandparents. Valerie was told, until the age of 9, that her grandfather was her father and that her mother was a family friend.

Valerie used a DNA test to confirm that her husband was also, in fact, her father. Although she strongly suspects that Percy knew that he was married to his daughter, she’s not 100 percent sure, because he never talked about it.

Valerie’s mother, Christine, who died in 1984, provided testimony in the infamous 1980’s corruption trial of Summit County Probate Judge James Barbuto, who was later convicted of sex charges. Christine and Percy Spruill started seeing each other when he was 15. While it is not clear how many children the two had together, Valerie says she is aware of six brothers, and hopes to find more siblings, through going public with the story.

Hoping that the story will be an inspiration to others going through a rough time, according to Daily News, Valerie says, “If I’ve come through this, anyone can come through anything through the help of the Lord.” As inspiring as Valerie’s recovery from this unspeakable trauma may be, it hasn’t been easy. She blames the stress she’s been under since finding out the truth about her husband/father for a series of medical problems. She is also still in therapy, to try to come to terms with the revelation.

It is difficult to get past the sensationalistic aspects of the story. But the thought that someone could function normally after a discovery such as this truly is inspiring.
