Women Voters Remember, It Was ‘We, The People; Not We, The White Male Citizens’

Women voters are over 52 percent of the electorate and could ensure a victory for Barack Obama in swing states. The Republican “War on Women” could end or Romney could do away with Planned Parenthood and select pro-life judges to overturn Roe v. Wade. Which would you prefer?

The title of this article is a quote from Susan B. Anthony. On Nov. 5, 1872, she voted in the Presidential election. Anthony cast her vote for Republican Ulysses S. Grant and voted Republican all the way down the ticket. Quite a far cry from today’s Republicans.

Susan B. Anthony was arrested and indicted after voting. She went around making speeches after her arrest saying, “It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. And it is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while they are denied the use of the only means of securing them provided by this democratic-republican government—the ballot.”

In 2012, the Republicans are trying to keep women from having the same access to health care as males, attempting to infringe upon a woman’s rights to her own body, denying women fair pay, and redefining rape. One would be hard-pressed to think that a Susan B. Anthony alive today would be voting Republican.

How are Republicans limiting a woman’s access to health care?

They want to repeal Obamacare which provides for birth control pills as well as Viagra on health insurance.

How are Republicans infringing upon a woman’s rights to her own body?

Mitt Romney wants to outlaw abortion. Authors of the successful book and movie “Freakonomics” contend that reduced crime rates are a direct result of Roe v. Wade. Fewer unwanted babies in the world equals fewer future criminals in the world. So, not only are the Republicans attempting to control women’s bodies, they could be causing a spike in crime in the next 20 years. Typical of the party that thinks only of themselves and their current bottom line; never about the future of anyone else.

How are they denying women fair pay?

Romney won’t say how he feels about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. But, only 8 out of 219 Republicans were in favor of equal pay for women in 2009. Based on some of their other policies, it is becoming very clear where Republicans think women should be – barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. What year is this again?

How are Republicans redefining rape?

Surely you’ve heard the Todd Akin comment about “legitimate rape” and how the woman’s body will just “shut down.” And then there’s Mourdock’s comment calling rape a “gift from God.”

Republican white men hardly even view women as human. Can a human being “shut down” their reproductive organs on demand? If Mourdock got gang raped by three non-white men and was impregnated by one of them, would he still consider that child growing inside him a “gift from God?”

And again, if a woman is forced to have a rapist’s baby, she must take time off work for doctor appointments, she must raise the child (with all the costs associated, all lowering her socioeconomic status) and she will likely need help via entitlement programs the Republicans want to cut. Who is going to pay for these unwanted babies? The rapists? Mitt Romney?

The Republican party has just gone too far right to lead America in the correct direction…which is FORWARD!

Women voters, go vote! Make Susan B. Anthony proud.
