A worker cooked to death in a large industrial oven at a California Bumble Bee seafood plant is being investigated by safety officials. The business, which is most known for its canned tuna, called 911 on Thursday morning, and policemen found poor Jose Malena, 62, dead inside of a device called a “steamer machine.” What a horrible way to die. (If images of lobsters being cooked in boiling pots of water are filling your head, you’re not alone.)
They are saying that the unfortunate incident is an accident, rather than suicideÂ—but there are so many unanswered questions. Officials are trying to figure out how the man ended up inside the oven to begin with, and “whether there were any workplace safety regulatory violations.” (Um, that seems like a no-brainer.) How can you have a worker cooked to death without some sort of violation?
Pat Menke, spokesman for the company, said in a statement: “The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Malena family.” Operations at the plant were suspended over the weekend, and how this incident might affect consumers’ appetites for Bumble Bee tuna is yet to be determined.
