In recent WWE news and rumors, one site is reporting that The Undertaker may return to action early in 2013 to help the wrestling company boost its ratings. Taker, real name Mark Calaway, usually shows up ahead of WrestleMania to begin promotion of his “undefeated streak” before a big match at the PPV. However, he may return a bit earlier to generate more interest in WWE.
A report from F4WOnline via Wrestling Inc earlier today noted that Vince McMahon wants “The Deadman” to work at WrestleMania 29 next year. That seems like a given, as he has delivered huge matches the past several years against both Triple H and Shawn Michaels, while defending his legendary undefeated streak. However, Vince may want to take things a step further, and have Taker back earlier, for the 2013 Royal Rumble.
The Wrestling Inc report states:
“The idea is that he would be a huge name in the Rumble match and they would tease that he could get one more big-time title match at WrestleMania.”
There had been WWE rumors and speculation that Undertaker might face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania next year. Other gossip had him facing Ryback, who is also on a current “undefeated streak,” although that streak is under the name Ryback, and not for the wrestler’s career as a whole. Undertaker was last seen on the epic 1,000th episode of Raw when he arrived to the ring to help his brother Kane fight off a variety of attacking WWE superstars. It wasn’t an official match, but it certainly had fans wanting The Deadman back in action.
The one thing WWE needs to be careful with is Taker getting hurt during the Rumble or any other match they might put him in ahead of Mania. At age 47, he’s not the young, spry “Phenom” he once was, although some might say he’s still young by WWE standards as Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair continue to get into matches beyond that age. Still, the main idea is to keep The Undertaker healthy enough to be among the major draws for WrestleMania 29 when it takes place on April 7th, 2013 in New Jersey.
Do you think Undertaker will compete at Royal Rumble? Also, which opponent would you most like to see him face at WrestleMania 29?
