Zach Greinke to Phillies? Phillies Blogger Makes Bogus Tweet Impersonating SI’s Jon Heyman, Fools Everyone
In a clear-cut case of Twitter impersonation, Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman tweeted last night that a deal had been worked out between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Kansas City Royals, sending star pitcher Zach Greinke to the Phils.
Unfortunately for Phillies fans, the treasonable tweet didn’t actually come from Jon Heyman, but rather from a rogue Phillies blogger named Mike Meech, who ran the now defunct blog The Fightins.
Meech was able to pull off the hoax thanks to some clever letter replacement. Â You see, the real Jon Heyman’s twitter handle is “@SI_JonHeyman,” while the bogus blogger’s was “@Sl_JonHeyman.”
Notice the difference? Â SB Nation didn’t either when writer Michael Levin jumped on the story and ran the headline “Phillies Acquire Zach Greinke From Royals” last night.
Meech switched the uppercase “I” in “SI” to a lower-case “L,” making it nearly indecipherable with Twitter’s font.
The real Jon Heyman finally caught wind of the fraud after ESPN 1050’s Michael Kay reported the Greinke story as fact, according to crossingboard.com.
Once the dust settled and Greinke remained firmly in Royals’ blue and white, Meech showed off his Twitter hubris with this tweet:
“The whole point of pulling a (good) prank is to fool people. Â Those who get fooled by it, normally take the stance of a humorless jerkoff. “
This came in response to Heyman’s (admittedly) perturbed tweet:
“Some sick fake person tweeted under a name close to mine that greinkes going to phils. not true. not even close to true.”
The more important question here is, how does Zach Greinke feel about all this? Â He was one fake tweet away from finally being on a contender! He’s probably more disappointed than Phillies fans are. Â You’re a baaaad man, Mike Meech.
